Well, since the Putnam Park track day seems to be getting a lot of attention, I thought I'd put in my $.02 about the Mid-Ohio event held by STT...
I am an instructor with Monte and the boys and want to say that they run a great track day. VERY controlled environment and they do a great job of making sure everyone is safe and in the proper class.
Saturday was a little sketchy as the track never really came in 100% until later in the day. Thankfully, the karts scrubbed it in in the morning, but the weather was cold and the air full of moisture. Not a great recipe for spirited rides on any track. However, it all went well and many of the guys had a great time.
Sunday was awesome. The weather was great, the track was great and it came in pretty early. We only had from 2-8pm, but let me tell you, two days and running at least 7 sessions a day in the advanced group was more than enough. Many folks roll out early as they are worn out and it gives a pretty damn clear track.
Had a lot of fun and met a few new faces. Hopefully I helped a few of you get a good idea of a few line choices out there. Some of the guys were flying and some were learning. All in all, a damn great weekend.
See ya all at the other STT Mid-Ohio days!!!

The LEDs held by STT are awesome. Lots of sadle time. I will do another one of those in a heartbeat. Gives you a different appreciation for endurance racers.

Where can one find a schedule for STT track days at Mid-Ohio? Are there any scheduled for later in the summer or in the fall (mid-August and afterwards)?
I'll be back from Mt. Kilimanjaro in mid-August, and hope to have the Daytona fully ready to go by that time too.

$$$$$$$$$$?????????????????
Google Sportbike Track Time. The last LED I did cost $150. You can enroll directly through the track and save the STT member fee. That's a deal considering the cost per sadle time compared to a regular track day.

Sounds good Lizard, I am going to try and hit the next LED.
I think you have to sign up for the LEDs through MidOH's website just like you do for the regular trackdays.

just go to www.sportbiketracktime.com. The whole schedule is up on their website and you can find out the pricing by going to their pricing section. By the way this past weekend was 195 for one day and 375 for both.

Yeah Lizard, Mid Ohio's within my reach too. More contact info would be great. Also, what does it cost to do one of these events?
haya slikchik
women riders can go for $125 with a $40 femmoto membership price that lasts all year and price goes for most of their track venues...
can't beat that price that has the guys wanting to wear wigs and bras :D

Folks have been posting links within the thread, but yes, go to www.sportbiketracktime.com and check it out. Great set-up. Really focus on three groups:
1) Novice - no passing and includes a school session and Q&A for beginning track riders. Absolutely geared towards a more personal experience with experienced staff
2) Intermediate - We establish a 6' rule to where we ask that there is no passing within a 6' area of any rider. Sure, some will be closer, but simply a guideline. We try and advance those who are going faster to Advanced.
3) Advanced - this is a group where passing is allowed, but we try and put a smack down on race passes. In other words, the only thing you win if you stuff a guy and make it to the line first is a handful of air. We also will place some down in the Intermediate group if we feel they are a bit of a hazzard. We'll let them learn the ropes and then if warranted, we'll bump them back up.
Instructors in all sessions and groups. For example, I was in advanced all day in both Sat and Sunday's sessions. My job was to watch the group and make sure it went smoothly. If need be, I would hunt down a guy "racing" and get them sorted out and talk afterwards about stuff passing, etc. I also was there to come up on slower guys who were having issues with lines and seemingly were gettingfrustrated in an effort to get them more up to speed. A few times it worked rather well.
Come on out and play!

Liz,
Glad you brought this up! It seemed folks here only went to Putnam and then only to Cycle Options or FASTRAKS and Nelsons. I must say, C.O. and Putnam are a great way to kick off the season but, I kept wondering about the rest of the season!
I have been doing STT since '03 and can only say good things about Monte and Bonnie (just don't let Bonnie catch you drinking coffee!). And, with FEMMOTO discounts there are a lot of women riders-- especially at M-O. I remember my first Intermediate session at M-O when some "Dude" on an RS250 wupped my a--. I thought: man, that guy is good! Afterward, I spotted the "dude" getting off his RS, pulling off his helemt and leathers. It was a gray haired lady with a "Grandma" physique that looked like she "should" be home doting after the grand kids! I had a good laugh--- at myself!
I raced M-O in the 70" and track days here in the last few years but not since the resurfacing. They had patches then that were slick as snot. I used the patches to determine my lines and braking points! Wonder what I'll use now? I can't wait! Hope to see you in June!

Well, unfortunately, they still have patches. Brand new surface and they can't go a year w/o laying down stupid patches. They aren't concrete, but they are a sealer material that just isn't all that confidence inspiring when cool or damp. Once dry and the track has come in, they are like they don't exist.
There are a pile of markers out there. Look me up and I will be glad to give you what I look for. Sure, it may be different from others, but maybe a bit of a help.
WHat dates in June? The LED on the 9th is out for me - Sales Meeting:doh:

Dang! Just remembered I am supposed to be in Detroit the 5th so I thought, well I'll do the LED (if I'm not in jail). But there is a twilight on a Saturday isn't there? Do you do those? If not, maybe I'll catch you at Grattan? Or in July (but it's so hot)

Liz,
I just looked at your profile-- you don't have light brown hair do you? My first STT was at Grattan (kinda my home track from "the old days" when I lived in Detroit) and my beginner instructor had the same first name-- that was back in May of 03. If that was you, that would be a freak eh? He (you??) told me my riding style was unorthodox and too aggressive. I took it as a compliment!

Nope, not me. I just started with STT. In 03 I was doing a full sprint schedule... I would have never commented on a riding style as being too aggressive or unorthodox. Each rider has their own style. You look at the top 5 MotoGP guys and they all have different styles. Stoner to Caparossi to Elias to Rossi, etc. No one should EVER tell you a certain way is the highway or else.
Suggesting a change in style - move your feet, hips, arms, whatever a bit is ok to try if you think they are wasting energy, but style is exclusive to each rider....
I'm registered for the 4 June '07 Mid-Ohio STT track day (intermediate group) - Can't wait!!

I really really want to get on Mid Ohio. I was an STT member last year, but never went to any of the events. Dont I have to wire tie my bike and have an under belly to run on Mid Ohio??? I really wanted to go there the weekend that you get to meet and greet the pros and ride the track with them, but i think thats $500 so not sure about that one yet.
chrisOH
05-04-2007, 01:19 PM
No you don't have to do any wiring for STT that I know of. Just check their rules by class on their website.
You don't have to have a Race lower I know for sure.

Guys, check out www.sportbiketracktime.com and check all that you need.
As far as bike prep, it certainly makes sense to make your bike as track worthy as possible, but the only real requirements are to make sure all the lights are taped, the mirrors pulled and I would remove any coolant and replace with Water Wetter or similar.
Pretty easy stuff.
As far as gear goes, leather 2 piece suits or similar. Helmet and gloves, etc. Read teh required items and chime in with any assorted questions and I can help as much as possible.

On a lighter note; Whats the consensus on the poly glycol anti freeze stuff?

Here's what the rules on bike set-up requires:
http://www.sportbiketracktime.com/policies.html#bikeprep
Personally, I think you should only use what is legal for racing. That means only Water Wetter, Maxima's Kool-Aide, or just plain distilled water. The others Monte lists are actually containing a bit of Glycol stuff as they have a lower temp/anti freeze degree below regular water. I think the stuff is bad news, but hey... It's his show and he runs it top notch. I am sure he knows how hard or easy the stuff is to clean...
