Boy, 10, killed in ATV wreck

HEATHER CHAPIN , Morning Journal Writer 06/24/2003

RIDGEFIELD TOWNSHIP -- The grief-stricken mother of 10-year-old Aaron C. Greene of Ridgefield Township, who died Sunday after an all-terrain vehicle flipped over on him, said her son will be greatly missed.

''We loved him very much, and we're going to miss him very much. That's really all I can say right now. He'll be greatly missed,'' said Sue Greene, 4320 River Road.

Aaron was driving the ATV when it flipped on him and his 14-year-old sister, according to the Huron County sheriff's Capt. Ted Patrick.

He and his sister were driving up a hill near the Blue Bridge area, according to reports. When they were about 50 feet up the hill, the four-wheel Honda 300 flipped over on them, trapping them both, said Patrick.

The girl was able to free herself from under the wreckage and ''managed to somehow get the four-wheeler off the boy, but he was unconscious,'' said Patrick.

The sheriff's department, North Central EMS and the Huron River Joint Fire District responded to the call while the children's father, Ron Greene, performed CPR on the boy, said Patrick.

Aaron was pronounced dead at Fisher-Titus Medical Center, said Patrick.

Huron County Coroner Jeffrey Harwood ruled the cause of death as blunt chest trauma.

''It's really very tragic. Obviously, the family is quite tore up,'' said Harwood, adding that ATV wrecks are fairly frequent occurrences for both children and adults.

''(Four-wheelers) are known to be pretty dangerous things,'' said Harwood.

A 14-year-old boy from Tennessee died June 10 in Lorain when he crashed an all-terrain vehicle in a wooded area near the FirstEnergy West Lorain Power Plant on West Erie Avenue. Kevin Green was visiting his brother who lived in Lorain.

Aaron's family told the deputies that the boy was wearing a safety helmet, his sister riding on the rear of the machine did not have a helmet and that Aaron had four years of experience riding the ATV, said Patrick.

Aaron, a lifelong resident of the area, had just completed the fourth grade at Monroeville Elementary School and was active in the Desperados 4-H Club and the 4-H Rabbit Club. He enjoyed outdoor activities, caring for the family's horses and rabbits and tinkering with bicycles.

My friend in Australia nearly got killed when his ATV flipped over going up a small hill. He got trapped underneath and is very, very lucky to be alive.
He says that the ATVs are more dangerous than a motorcycle and now makes his boys wear a helmet when they drive their ATVs around on the farm.

I don't understand why someone would let a 10 year old drive (or would you say "ride") an ATV. I just don't understand. My heart goes out to the family.

I'm very sorry to hear that as that is always tragic to hear.

What pains me even more is on every ATV sold in America there are caution and disclaimers on the actual ATV that state that passengers should NEVER be carried on an ATV and you will also find that on each and every ATV over 90cc (yes I did say OVER 90cc) no one under the age of 16 should be operating them no matter how many years experience a rider may or may not have. When/if you ride ATVs (which I do myself and love and defend riding deeply) if you think about riding double, take a look where your butt is going to sitting. 9 out of 10 times you'll see a circle with a slash on the actual seat that symbolizes no passengers.

They say that stuff for a reason. Not to say that that's what caused his death but a friend of mine experienced the same EXACT scenerio last year. He died at 26 and his passenger survived.

Just because it has four wheels does not mean that it is a toy. I can't stand when I see adults and kids getting on them without having any form of introduction on proper operation. Would you give your 10 year old the keys to your car or motorcycle? I will never understand why anyone thinks riding ATVs is any different.

EDIT: I just noticed how old the post was but regardless it's all the same message.

Actually, it was not in Lorain but Monroeville, OH.

I am Aaron's mother, and I appreciate you forwarding the article from the Morning Journal to your members of my son's death. I hope this article has touched your subscribers and maybe saved one life. Since, Aaron's death, I have devoted my life to help others, should it be through a phone call or an e-mail. Time does not heal in a parent's eye.

Thank you.
