What a weekend. It didn’t really start off very well. My dad installed airbags on the back of the Bus to level it out and it threw the hitch height way off. So we spent a good 2 hours trying to flip the hitch over so the Holeshot trailer would be level and not drag anything. After a broke ¾” ratchet (sorry dad) and a new 2” ball we were rolling. We arrived at F&S around 1pm. Just enough time to eat all there food at take some really good team pictures in front of our bike and trophies.
We got back on the road around 4pm and had a pretty uneventful trip up until we got about 5 miles from the track. The rear end of the Bus decided that it had enough and made some god-awful sounds. I pulled the rig over to see what the hell was wrong and noticed a hole in the pumpkin cover, gear oil on everything and a lot of smoke. We decided to limp it the rest of the way and barely made it into the track. The next morning we woke up and hooked the trailer onto Dean’s van so we can get our equipment into the track and I tried to move the Bus out of the way. It moved until it was blocking the whole driveway and decided to completely lockup. After several attempts I finally got it to free up and did an impressive hole shot into the grass.
I spent most of my morning trying to track someone down to work on the Bus. Big thanks to Max at the track for running me around. I finally got someone lined up for Monday and I tried to focus on why we went up there in the first place.
Steve and Mike were practicing all morning and I was able jump on and get a little in myself before lunch. Mike and I replaced the tires while Steve walked all the up to the Bus to get our food. After lunch Steve and Mike went out a few more times before the mock starts. I launched it a few times to get used to the clutch and sat out on the rest of them.
After I did my warm up lap I noticed that in my grid position I couldn’t see the flag tower. I thought to myself “Why can’t anything be easy this weekend?”. :what: I somehow managed to get the holeshot and off we went. I had a great time out there with everyone. I did a personal best in the low 28’s. Mike held up the board for me to come in and I tried to let him know that I wanted one more lap. I just had to get that one last pass in before I pitted.
I threw the bike at Steve and a splash of gas and off he went. I have to say great job on his first full hour on the bike. We have been plagued with red flags and wrecks and he never got to run a full hour. I can’t remember his lap times but I know they were consistently in the low 30’s. Great Job!
I showed Steve the board and Mike took off. Another great job from the second rookie on my team running a very low 32. Not to bad being his 4th race and his second time there. His run was pretty uneventful except for Jim from Great Lake Powersports smacking him around down the front straight. It was funny to watch but it freaked Mike out a little. He took the checkered flag and brought us home a 2cd place finish 10th over all.
The next morning I told everyone to ride home with Dean and Dave and I will stay with the Bus. Bob and Carol got me into the track for free and I helped them out all day. I have a new appreciation for Carol, she is the heart and sole of Fasttrax. The next time any of you racers see her you should thank her for all of her hard work because without her everything would fall apart. They kept me busy gridding and scoring the sprinters. It was a lot of work but it kept my mind off of my problem.
After the races I called AAA and waited for 45 minutes on the phone until they were able to find someone capable enough to tow the Bus. We finally got it rolling and towed it to APG Automotive in Grand Rapids. Stewart met us there Sunday night and allowed me to sleep in the lot. He worked on it all day Monday and got me back on the road by 5 that evening. Stewart did a hell of a job and got me out of a bad predicament. Hats off to you brother and all the other people that helped me through the weekend.
I hope everyone takes the time to check out our sponsors.
