my buddy picked up a set of SC slicks while at the raes in Atlanta for me, so it aught to be fun if I get a chance to go. Willbe my first time on slicks so it will be interesting to see how they do....

Further up in the thread there's a link to the webpage of the guy that's putting it on.

http://www.cycleoptions.com

If you looking for information about what you need to go? I think he has some information there, but here's what I know.

-Full gear (helmet/boots/gloves and some sort of suit)
-no safety-wire required
-no coolant allowed (water OR water+waterwetter only)
-GOOD tires (no baldies)

Things I'd bring in addition to the bike:

-cooler with lots of water
-5 gallon gas can full of gas
-clear/tinted shields
-tools
-rain gear
-camera
-rags
-duct tape

That's all I can think of off the top of my head

I dont know what group to ride in, I have never ridden Putnam before and dont know how fast a 1:20 lap time is, Ihave had plenty of trackdays, and I am not slow, just dont know if I am that fast. Anyone with input?

For the record, I run 1:23's at Roebling Road, and race pace is usally about 1:17's....any suggestions, I am thinking that the intermediate race is prolly for me this time...and I can go from there.

Someone let me know if i am way off on this...

Hey Zixer, the fast guys in a race at Putnam will run 1:10- 1:12. you may want to start in the intermediate group to feel out the track and then work your way up.

I had a good time riding with you guys. I'm still debating on Putnam though. If I do go it will be saturday for sure. Just imagine the pace we were riding yesterday in Kentucky, and assume that is about 50% of a putnam pace...

Cost wise, it is actually cheaper to spend 3 days down at Deals Gap than it is to run 1 trackday. So I'm pondering going out for a few sessions one day, or spending 2.5 days riding with good buddies down at the gap. Not to mention the wonderful Maryville nightlife (hooters).

In all reality I can go just about as fast on Blood Mountain or even the gap (corner speed wise) as I can at Putnam. I dont know, we'll have to see...
Not to mention all of the fun stuff you can do at the track (passing in corners, riding about 6 inches from someone) can basically be done down there too.

Yea its dangerous, but I didnt get into riding because it was safe:p

dmarable
09-13-2004, 11:47 AM
I *love* blood Mtn, and the Gap, and can/do ride both pretty hard at times, but neither can actually compare to being at the track. I did the pre-registration before the cut off date, so I am there two days for $200. Throw in the deal my wife got on a set of tires, using a dunlop coupon, so for two days at the track it's not gonna be too HORRIBLE. Plus those tires will make good streeters after.

Also, for *me* I've been down to the Dragon 3 times this year so far, and haven't gotten my new bike (the one I'm racing next year) on the track yet, so I'm itching to do that.

prozakk
09-13-2004, 03:11 PM
yea we had a good pace yesterday I've never been on a track so i'm looking forward to going fast and rubbin elbows ;) I am also thinking about a gap trip before she gets to cold out!

kneedragger77
09-13-2004, 03:14 PM
Dmarable is right though. As fast as we go on the street there is still another notch, and that is the track. On the street you might be hauling butt but in the back of your mind you always know to keep yourself in check. On the track, you take chances, go faster, and really let it all hang out

prozakk
09-13-2004, 03:52 PM
yea i race motorcross and snocross so i kinda know what ya mean by letting it all hang out hey thats when the fun really starts, and im sure it's a step higher then that even. Im looking forward to it. I'll try to keep up ;)

Putnam will break those habits, or the R6.....lol

I love the track, i dont like to ride all out on the street, we had a good pace on Sunday for sure, but its a street pace, and very slow as compared to the track, where you dont have to worry about gravel or oncomming cars. When i get to riding stoopid on the street I know its tiem to get a fix from the track.

I will pay for my day tomorrow, and I am going saturday..I will probably run the inermediate race group at first, and if I need to move up I will, but I would rather take it easy at first and learn the track and then work on speed...after all I havent even made a payment on the ZX10 yet....lmfao...andits fixing to have its 3rd set of tires on it....lmfao

Good point... Putnam can be fun and much faster. Even in intermediate you will have some fast guys for sure, so it wont be shooting fish in a barrel. :D Hot lap group is great though, you should bump up after lunch if you are running 1:20's or so. Most of the time you end up running alone or with one other guy because there are less people out there and eveyone holds a good pace. Count on being lapped by a few peeps though:p (not me)

I've only been to putnam 2 times and am still working on getting turns 1 and 2, and 9 and 10 down. Those turns can be tough ones

ZIXER
09-14-2004, 07:18 PM
hell there isnt a big woman at the end of the day holding a check or a trophy so I will take it easy and learn the track....then will ride my pace until I get comfortable with the track. maybe after lunch after I have lapped the track a few times I will push it hard and see what happens....I have 3 goals when i go to the track.
1. Take the bike home in one piece....I make payments....lol

2. Learn something......we are never too old to learn

3. Have FUN......why go if its not fun.....lol

I can definitely feel your pain. Yet another reason I am loving the "freedom" of being able to plan my life since being out of the service. I had to NCOIC more than my share of funeral details, staff duties on New Years and Christmas, etc etc... Its why they call it "serving" your country.

On another note, I have never felt a more strange feeling then when I was standing there next to a casket of a WW2 vet, flag by my side, taps being played, and the rifle team shooting 3 volleys.... Man what a feeling...

Thanks for your service and it is very much appreciated. Do our fellow soldiers honor at the funeral. I'll catch ya soon:cool:

It is at Nelson Ledges, and cost for 2 days is about $520. Then you'll have your race license. Gotta still renew for 2005 I believe after that though.

Plus I "plan" to run part of the 3 hour endurance on saturday. So I'll be getting about 4 times more track time than I would at putnam.

I'll be on the (look at my avatar) GSXR with black/white spidi leathers.

I'll be pitted with any of the other blcd gang that goes.

Red/White Motard - Tim
Silver/Black F4i - Erin
Blue/White Motard - Jerry

There may be a few others, but I'm not sure right now if they're going.

A successful weekend, the bike is still together, however one bone-head maneuver by me and I have two slightly bent rims, and one bone-head maneuver by someone else on Sunday and I have a bruise/sore knee.

I shredded my tire pretty good in the hot-group on Saturday so I bumped myself down to the intermediate group to ride a little easier.

Got to meet Shane and one other guy (can't remember his name). Both had "interesting" days that I'll let them talk about if they want too.

Weather was AWESOME, as was the riding

On my way to Indy Saturday morning, the blcd.net tow vehicle & trailer passed me, then someone towing a supermoto bike on an open trailer, then a pickup truck carrying a Ninja (I think).

Anyone here?

I had a really good day except for my lowside entering turn 8 during the second session. I came away with no injuries and my bike just has some plastic rash and a bent clutch and shift lever. My bike started right up and after a few minor adjustments I was able to ride the rest of the day. My buddy Dan got a little happy with the right hand coming out of turn 8 in the third session and lowsided. When his bike slid into the grass it tumbled and broke off both pegs and bent the clip on bad enough to keep the throttle from working. He had to park it and become my pit boy for the rest of the day. I was glad to get my knee down around the track. I really learned a lot. I can't wait until April for the next one. Oh yeah, it was nice to meet ya Dallace.:D
