Cool Colorado

Thom Boles and I rode a few days in Colorado during the week of June-28. I think both of us spent a little too much time in the higher elevations and struggled a bit both physically and mentally at times, but overall had a really great trip. I think our motto was 'Quality miles, not quantity." or maybe it was "If this roads get really bad, then... umm, we'll just keep going!" or something like that. I don't quite remember. Anywho... Not gonna do a whole write up, but I figure tossing out a few photos of your recent travels wouldn't hurt.

Re: Colorado

TTTom: Wow! Great pics. Looks like you had primo weather for your journey.

I'll take a few cold nights to rain/snow/hail at higher elevations. Bryn and I ran into this on Engineeer Pass in early August….

….and this heading home from Telluride, where the road over Lizard Head Pass was closed for 2 hours due to a mud slide….

Who said anything about a few cold night?
Yes, the weather was about as good as you could get.

Re: Colorado

I'm planning (well, I "want to go") a trip to Denver then north sometime this year. Was thinking of the week after Indy MotoGP, got to using the old google machine and found out average August temp in Denver is 93*F, September is 82*F so I may just go early September instead.

Thinking my route may be Denver, Black Hills, Yellowstone.

Your pics make me so envious! Looks like a great time!

What was it like w/ the climate change throughout the trip? I've never experienced anything like that. Any pointers?

Re: Colorado

September would be nice. You might see the Aspen turn golden.

Colorado is high country desert. Dress in layers, drink lots of water. Colorado 93F is not the same as it would be in the Midwest. When it is 'hot' there, it feels cooler due to the thinner atmosphere and lower humidity.

You can get hypothermia in July at speed if you aren't covered up. Your sweat and the dry air will cool you off very fast.

Sunburn will be faster and worse due to thinner air... Cover up or sunscreen - even on the back of the hands if your gloves don't cover completely...

Headaches usually occur from high altitude. Take aspirin or Tylenol with you for headaches - whatever you normally use.

Sand and gravel on the curves sometimes after a storm - as usual.

Last time we were there rode into a hailstorm on Berthoud Pass with marble size hail. Was wishing for a fairing and armored pants after about 2 minutes...

Make sure you get gas when you can. Sometimes gas stations can be a distance apart. Our bikes are only good for about 90 to 100 miles.

Yellowstone is less extreme than the Colorado Rockies. Watch out for critters. Don't spar with the moose or buffalo - they can be aggressive. Elk and deer not so much...

Not sure about the Black Hills of South Dakota yet.

Devils Tower in Wyoming is a cool stop - if you will be in the Black Hills. Doesn't look like what Spielburg used in 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'...

That's all I can think of...

Lee B

PS - wear UV sunglasses - the sun is very bright.

Re: Colorado

Our last two days in Colorado, spent at this awesome little euro-style Motel, owned by a family from Poland. We were very impressed and enjoyed their hospitality. If you're ever passing through Florence, stay here.

Elks, Eagles, and American Legion, all at the same intersection.

A few years ago, we found a road in the Malibu area off the PCH that I insisted must be the greatest motorcycle road in America, but during our ride on June-20, we rode a road that I KNOW is the greatest road we have ever ridden, and MUST be one of the greatest in the US, if not THE greatest. I know that is an absurd claim, but it's true. I am baffled that I have never seen this road appear in any of the many magazine articles claiming to list the Top-10 greatest roads (I've ridden many of those roads, and often times they're not so great). I've never even heard of this road, and I'm reluctant to even share the experience because it's so good, I kinda want to keep it a secret. But... Colorado-92, in the Gunnison Nat'l Conservation area, running along side the Gunnison River which is downstream from Black Canyon Nat'l Park. I would still consider it part of Black Canyon.

We had the road to ourselves, the pavement was in exceptionally good condition and well engineered, tight turns, high elevation with rapid changes, and spectacular views of the canyon. Many opportunities to stop, step out on the edge, and have vertigo moments like you have never experienced.
