Woz: Based on personal experience with the roads in the NC area, it's like riding on rough grit sandpaper. Great grip in the corners, but tire wear is abysmal. If you head out from home with shagged tires, you'll be on cord before the end of day 2. Consider yourself warned!!!

Dood-- it's DOOD!

Tires have plenty of tread-- just old and hard.
Having never been to NC before I appreciate the sincere advice!!!
( I do-- really)
But, I figure-- what's the worse that can happen-- I go off a cliff and get shanked on a huge splinter sticking out from a fallen tree or-- Glisson gets shit faced and and instead of passing out in a lawn chair, thinks I have a nice azz? (which I do)
(I'll go with the shanked by a tree!)

These two descriptors usually don't go together.

All of the above scenarios frighten me considerably. I am also becoming highly fearful of the thought of riding 1500-2000 miles with Wozerd….

We'll be leaving Wednesday and one day tripping it down. Got the cabin booked and everything. Just need to get some new rubber now.

Since you have taken it upon yourself to assign nicknames to our little band of misfits, can I start calling TTTom 'No Show' yet???

Re: 14th annual 2014 BRP Trip After Labor Day Trip

From the best that I can tell after reading through this thread a few times now, there are two different groups heading out on Tuesday, right? ...and both groups are taking TWO days down? When/where are the departures?

Re: 14th annual 2014 BRP Trip After Labor Day Trip

TTTom: I doubt if ANYTHING is carved in stone just yet, knowing the way this crew works….

I wasn't gonna post anything in the way of routes this year, but Dice and I had been planning a trip earlier this year to Big Stone Gap to ride some of the roads in that area. Never got down there, but still had a tentative route worked out, so I kind of pieced together a few roads that are perennial favorites, some that don't necessarily get ridden by Cinti folks on day rides, threw in a few ideas from DB and Scott, stuck it in the oven and baked it at 375 until golden brown.

Plan is--weather depending--to leave Tuesday morning. Meet-up time is 6:30-6:45 AM at the Speedway on AA Hwy and I-275 in Alexandria. Fueled and kickstands up at 7 AM sharp. (This is instruction from Dice!) So far, the list of maybe's is me, Dice and Bryn (Soutie).

DISCLAIMER: 1) These have NOT been 100% agreed to by anyone yet, so no one should feel obligated to ride with us--if you got any ideas, feel free to chime in, or I may just feel lazy and be a follower on someone else's route; 2) Day 1 is a long route--approx 385 miles and 11-12 hours of twisty back roads--and wouldn't be a fun day if the weather isn't cooperating, so if serious rain happens, this is gonna get modified.

Day 2 is essentially a re-hash of last year's second day (see the LR thread from 2013 for GPX file) which was cut short because of a late start from Abingdon. Lunch will prolly be at Bubba's BBQ in Burnsville, NC, because fat guys named Bubba like BBQ!!!

Day 1 Part 1: Alexandria Speedway to Hal Rogers Pkwy
https://goo.gl/maps/KRhNB

Day 1 Part 2: Hal Rogers Pkwy to Appalachia, VA
https://goo.gl/maps/Gn2tM

Day 1 Part 3: Appalachia VA to Abingdon, VA
https://goo.gl/maps/sOOcV

Day 2: Abingdon VA to Crusco NC/BRMC
https://goo.gl/maps/owfJg

There's an option for 5-6 miles of gravel (not shown on the maps) thru national forest lands each day with a meet-up point to rejoin the group along the original paved route. I can email a Word text version (*.docx) of the maps to those who prefer paper.

I have not mapped any fuel stops along the route, since the likelihood of satisfying everyone's fuel range needs is low. There are certainly stations at least every 100 miles or less for those with limited range. Assuming the ride goes on as planned, I'm staying at the Super 8 in Abingdon [Super 8, 298 Towne Center Dr, Abingdon, VA 24210; (276) 676-3329] for the easy roll in the morning, and I'll prolly wait until the last minute to make reservations.

Sorry you can't make it Chris!

Bubba, route looks great and I would like another crack at completing day 2 as well. Day 1 looks like a challenge so boys better eat a big breakfast and be on time! Keeping fingers crossed with the weather ,we could come up with another quick couple choices(east or west) if we need to take action to avoid a big storm.

I'm almost ready to go.. Fresh tires, brakes, fluids, chain, etc etc

I just checked the weather and there is 0% of snow during our ride!!

I do believe we have a better chance of hitting a thunderstorm than seeing snow, so looking at this on a positive note (the glass being half full or half empty of bourbon) it is still better than riding in the snow
