D.O.T.s -VS.- Slicks

I would like to try some slicks this season. Trackdays only though. I'm looking for the best durability with optimal grip. My questions:

Will I kill the slicks with heatcycles since I don't have tire warmers?

How different is the bike's handling compared to DOTs of similar triangular shape? (are major suspension changes required?)

...or should I ignore my ego and buy the cheapest DOTs I can find?

thanks

Re: D.O.T.s -VS.- Slicks

Well slicks will last a bit longer rubber wise, but heat cycles will be the same as the DOT races AKA Michelin Power Race PR# series, BT002/BT003, Dunlop Ntec D209 series. I am pretty sure that the profiles are close to same only marginally different, and some brands may be the same.

But the heat cycle will most likely be the same with either tire, but slicks will last a bit longer and offer a fraction more grip.

Oh i see you want slicks for the next time we meet at putnam lol. For that TL you should get some Pirelli DOT race tires. Or the bridgstone BT002race copound tire(PM me if u need some). As for the tire warmers i hear that most slicks need them to work like they were designed(with a opperating temp). I used the Pirelli many times without the warmers, but they lasted 3 hard track days. When and where you going to be at the track?

---No more TL. I sold it - went to a good home, local, I still get to see it sometimes. I got a track-only 2001 GSX-R750, but it will need some on-track developing work at first, since I can't really ride it on the street.

---Yeah, its a toss-up between BT002s and some Michelin Slicks, I got the price fairly close.

---Pirellis would be nice, but I can't find them at a reasonable price.

If you don't have tire-warmers, I would not mess with slicks. They like a lot of heat to start with. Just my closed-minded opinion.

+1 matt! I agree with needing warmers for slicks.

Re: D.O.T.s -VS.- Slicks

It can be done, I have seen a lot of guys run slicks without warmers. It just requirest the general same 2-3 lap warmup depending on ambient temp.

Slicks and DOT races tires are pretty much the same carcass now a days.. And I am think they are almost if not identical in compound to the slick.
