Smile New member to LR group, old member on other forums!

Hi all,

I'm a new member of the group I've been riding for five years, started with a Royal Enfield 500 back home in India (still have it! My sister rides it now ). My riding was changed for the better two years ago when I tool up the BRC and then later the ARC riding courses. Top quality classes! Wish I had them back in India growing up - I learned to ride just like riding a bicycle - trial and error.

I'm now firmly in the ATGATT camp. I've had a crash which I survived un scarred thanks to my gear. I write about motorcycle related stuff on my blog :-

1) motorcycle riding & risk

http://www.paleogyan.com/2016/03/02/...ucate-oneself/

2) Winter riding tips!

http://www.paleogyan.com/2015/12/11/...cle-in-winter/

I've also had the Yamaha V Star 650 (way too small for me) and then the Honda ST1100 Silver 1991 which I sold a month ago to Bill.

I currently ride a 2007 v strom 650. I'm new to chain management and am trying to find any local rider/expert who could guide and help me change the chain/sprockets in return for my humble offerings of a grand lunch + your fav 6 pack craft beer . I've the chain, sprockets on hand but...I don't want to risk aligning it incorrect both the v star and the ST1100 were shaft drives.

I've done 18,000 miles on the ST in two years, am a big fan of long distance touring. I'm in the process of farkling the wee strom for distance touring!

I look forward to meeting with, and riding with the local group more.

I'm on advrider, stromtrooper, vsri/vsari & ST owners under the handle "thepaleobiker"

Recent mods on the wee strom :-

LED headlights update
LED aux lights
Stebel horn
LED turn signals
Givi D260ST Tall windshield
Fork brace
Mirror extenders
Peg lowering kit
MadStad brackets
Blue seas Fuse box
Suzuki OEM Gel seat DL1000

Vishnu

That's awesome! I'm very comfortable working with the electronics on the bike, but I'm finding my lack of a proper garage challenging in doing the more mechanical updates (suspension /chain)

I look forward to using the wisdom on this group . Hope to ride with you sometime soon Jeff! Cheers.

Vishnu

Re: New member to LR group, old member on other forums!

Welcome,

I'd help but I'm a bit far away. I recently changed my chain and sprocket with the help of a local friend. I too have been chainless for a while until I got this bike.

I will say it's not as daunting as it appears.

I bought a Motion Pro (08-0470) PBR Chain Break
I figured if I was going to do this myself I might as well have the correct tools for the job.

Someone will likely come along to help but if you can swing it this is a really nice tool to use. Even my friend that helped said it was better than anything he'd ever used before.

Thank you for your kind words, I truly feel comforted I indeed looked up this very same chain breaker and watched a bunch of YouTube videos....But then I was told I'd need to also look at chain alignment etc

I guess I'd gladly do it myself, if only I had a final guiding eye making sure I didn't screw things up

I know it's not rocket science either, so I'll gladly Keep learning and gathering as much info as I can and then take a shot at changing it myself. I have the chain/sprockets with me.

I just feel a little tricked out thinking about linking the chains and riveting the two pieces....

But hey, there's time! I'll keep asking around for tips and guidance via this forum and the other ones! Cheers ! Thanks again Thom!

Vishnu

Tod - I heard about this a week ago, and on Tuesdays, I volunteer to teach kids math/science till about 8:15 pm, would the gathering be still going on at 8:30 pm/8:45 PM ?

Thanks for the heads up! I'm pretty easy to find, a tall Asian Indian guy !

Vishnu

That's perfect! Bring the class with you! There is lots of math and science going on there. They could work on mass & density lessons with the burritos, geometry at the pool table, percentages of alcohol content at the bar lol. there is much to be discovered ;-)

I would love to try do it on the weekend if that works. I need to also make sure I'm testing the chain sag/tension correctly, so I may already be close to extremes ?

I've had the bike about a month now. I already am looking to upgrading the fork springs and fork oil, but the chain is something that to me, seems pretty important/urgent.

Would this Saturday work for you? I can ride over to your place if that'd be helpful. Thank you again!

Vishnu
