Free - Dwell Tachometer

Cleaning out the basement we came across this item, Sears model number 161.2177 Dwell Tachometer. It's used to check dwell (which I guess is kinda like spark advance) and rpm on motors that use a points ignition system. Works on 4, 6 and 8 cylinder motors. Sorry, British car owners - only works on conventional 12V systems. It's complete - meter w/attached cables, instructions and box.

Looking at the box and price tag, I'd say this thing is from the early 80s.

Free to whoever wants it; sorry, no shipping, but I can bring it to TWT.

My dad taught me how to use those things way back when. You need a timing light to get the settings right. You need to know if you are BTDC or ATDC with the timing light.

Well, we do have a timing light, but I believe my father wants to keep it. None of the vehicles we have now use a points ignition system, so we have no need for this.

Either I give it away, or it goes in the trash.

Whether you have points on your vehicle or not, it can be handy for watching rpm variations when tuning carbs (mixture screws and synch). The meter is more sensitive to minor rpm changes than most anolog tachs.
